About Us

“Mommy,” I began, “when I grow up I want to be a teacher.”

My mother smiled down at me, her five year old son, smiled, and replied, “Then that is what you will become.”

It turns out she was right.

I graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Theatre and Film, along with minors in English and History. Furthermore, it should be noted that I had enough credits to change my major to either English or History.   During my years at McMaster, my burgeoning passion for theatre intermixed with my longstanding passion for teaching children.  I joined a local theatre company and became both a fellow actor and a mentor to many young actors.  Reflecting back on the work I did in children`s theatre, I realize I spent as much time organizing learning opportunities and social activities for the children as I did acting on stage.

After McMaster, I attended the University of Toronto to acquire my Bachelor of Education.  I still remember how beautifully the sun reflected off the glass of my newly framed degree on graduation day.

Not long after this marvelous day, however, a pack of hungry clouds enveloped the sun in its icy cold grip.  I had entered into a brutally oversaturated, teaching related job market.

Luckily, the sun always finds a way to break free.   It did so on one blissful day that I will always remember.  For what seemed an eternity, I stood outside my then current employer`s workplace reading a sign that stated my fellow workers and I were being temporarily laid off.   I walked back to my car, intending to drive around looking for a new job.  However, as my hand reached the door handle, my eyes came to rest upon two children happily laughing together as they were riding their bicycles.  I smiled to myself, hopped into my car, drove home, and cleared out a room in my house for an office.

Mavin Tutoring was born, but I did not expect to keep the business open for long.  As soon as the job market opened up a little, I was convinced I would shut the doors on Mavin Tutoring and work as a teacher in a school.

Apparently, however, I lacked my mother`s sense of what the future would hold for me because I was completely wrong.  I absolutely fell in love with one-on-one teaching.  Tutoring offers me something that even the school system cannot — the ability to spend as much time on any given concept that an individual student requires.   I am able to plan entire lessons and units meant to address an individual student’s needs.  Also, as a tutor, I have the incredible pleasure of witnessing all of my students’ improvements in their intellectual skill sets – those both large and small.

Although helping children to achieve their true learning potentials is an amazing feat for any company, I have decided that my company must do much more.  I wish to assist those teachers, who like me, during those cloudy days, are having trouble finding jobs in the school system.  These teachers spend countless hours juggling volunteering in the classroom (which is an amazing experience) and working jobs in fields that do not appeal to them just to survive.  I wish to provide these highly dedicated individuals a chance to do what they love – teach children – and to make a living doing so.  Mavin Tutoring, therefore, is a company devoted not only to its students, but also to its tutors.
